With the return of the Free Shia league, many Path of Exile veterans are once again facing the same familiar question: how do you squeeze maximum fun, profit, and survivability out of a short, high-juice league that only lasts three to four weeks? For some players, the answer is speed. For others, it's bossing. But for a particular kind of exile-the kind who enjoys watching enemies kill themselves-the answer is clear.
It's time to reawaken the Hellfire Ancestral Commander POE currency.
This build isn't new. In fact, it first saw serious play back in 3.25 (Settlers), where it quietly proved it could push 1,000+ Delve depth with minimal effort. It was never marketed as a flashy boss killer, but it didn't need to be. Instead, it thrived on endurance charge stacking, absurd mitigation layers, and the kind of survivability that lets you go nearly AFK while content deletes itself around you.
Now, with Free Shia returning-and with a massive pile of new systems added since the last time this event ran-the build is back, stronger, chunkier, and more flexible than ever.
Why Ancestral Commander?
The core of this setup is the Ancestral Commander ascendancy, an absurdly powerful choice when it comes to endurance charge generation and defensive scaling. The entire philosophy of the build revolves around abusing endurance charges as hard as possible and converting them into raw tankiness.
Endurance charges give:
Physical damage reduction
Elemental damage reduction
Synergy with multiple defensive mechanics
Ancestral Commander doesn't just generate charges-it drowns you in them, and that's exactly what this build wants. The end result is a character that doesn't dodge danger, doesn't kite, and doesn't care. It stands still, gets hit, and keeps going.
Calling it an AFK build isn't exaggeration-it's honesty.
A Different Take Than Last Time
When Free Shia ran previously, many players leaned heavily into Seal Island variants of this build. While effective, this approach wasn't the only way to do things. The version being explored now takes a very different angle, focusing on consistent mitigation, endurance charge abuse, and newer systems added in recent leagues.
Back in 3.25, this configuration could already push deep Delve with ease. With everything that's changed since then, the ceiling is even higher.
New Grafts, New Power
One of the biggest reasons this build is being revisited is the introduction of new graft options in recent leagues. These grafts slot perfectly into the Ancestral Commander playstyle.
Greywind House
Greywind House allows you to afflict ailments on enemies and then gain extra elemental damage as a portion of physical damage based on those ailments. Since this build applies ignite constantly, the synergy is immediate and powerful.
Tender Embrace
Tender Embrace is one of the standout additions. It:
Grants an endurance charge when triggered
Provides a massive boost to life recovery rate
In practice, this procs constantly, especially in Delve. The result is sustained healing layered on top of already obscene mitigation.
Heart of Flame
Heart of Flame shifts 80% of damage from hits into a buff before it even touches life or energy shield. Combined with Petrified Blood and high life regeneration, this turns burst damage into a non-issue.
Together, these grafts push the build from "very tanky" into "why am I not dead?"
Life Pool, Petrified Blood, and Tank Math
This build uses Petrified Blood, which means life scaling matters. The target is around 6,500 life, which ensures incoming damage is consistently smoothed out rather than spiking dangerously.
With endurance charges, regeneration, mitigation layers, and Petrified Blood all working together, the build becomes incredibly forgiving-even in content that would normally delete less prepared characters.
New Uniques to Consider
Recent leagues also introduced new unique options that slot cleanly into this setup.

Final Thoughts: Why This Build Works for Free Shia
Free Shia is short. It's intense. And it rewards players who can farm efficiently without burning out. The Hellfire Ancestral Commander AFK build fits that environment perfectly.
Tanky enough to ignore most threats
Flexible enough to adapt to new systems
Profitable across multiple farming strategies
Relaxing to play in a league designed to be hectic
With new grafts, better crafting options, async trade, and idol synergies, this version of the build is stronger than it's ever been.
If you're looking for a league starter that lets you focus on progression instead of survival, this might be the perfect way to experience Free Shia.
